WHAT’s THE DEAL

WITH THE
DEAD BUDDHAS?

“If you’re looking for a certain ‘type’ of band, The Dead Buddhas aren’t one. Our individual artistic perspectives and styles meld together to create a diverse range of novel sounds. Instead of boxing ourselves into one niche genre, we believe in creating for the sake of creation itself—letting our minds become antennae for receiving ideas, with music as the medium of expression. That’s the beautiful thing about music: it only happens once, yet remains timeless. Simply put, we’re just four friends who grew up in the same town and love all types of music.”

“At our core, we’re just a group of guys who aren’t afraid to express ourselves unapologetically. We embrace the differences between us and look for ways to bridge the gaps without compromise. That’s what we’re really doing with our music: weaving a web that encompasses all of who we are while shedding light on the circumstances, experiences, and relationships that shaped us. At times, there are juxtapositions that seem like pieces of a puzzle that don’t quite fit together, but that’s the fun of having a think tank of perspectives and creative intuition—we break the rules and craft something better than the sum of its individual parts.”

“The Dead Buddhas is inspired equally by the natural and industrialized landscapes of Wisconsin, American history, and a deep sense of disillusionment with the technocratic modern world. The Dead Buddhas reflects these perspectives in different ways, ranging from hardcore to country to psychedelic shoegaze. Our music is meant to convey how we experience the world in real time: reverence, love, grief, anger, and fleeting moments of peace and understanding amid the chaos of life.

’Dead Buddha’ has two meanings. In Eastern philosophy, a bodhisattva chooses to return to the world after reaching enlightenment to show others the way. But for someone who doesn’t return, are they enlightened, or are they just dead? Is there even such a thing as a spirit world, or do we already live in it? Ultimately, these are the questions we wrestle with in our music.”

“The point of all of this is strengthening friendships, honing creative spirit, and ultimately reconnecting with a deep and often forgotten love of music. There’s nothing like getting together with good company, sharing a few beers, setting aside the stresses of the day, and diving into the magic of making music. We challenge each other to show more humility in what we do, to leave our egos behind, and to truly collaborate as equals.”
